One thing I vividly recall from my high school days is those notice boards. They often carried powerful messages. Today, I’m excited to share one such message with all of you—a message about the power of intentionality in the modern digital age, particularly in the realm of data diplomacy.
Intentionality in Decision Making
If you are just starting out, you may ask yourself two questions:
What is the belief that you have about yourself and the world?
What practical steps are you taking to ensure that you realize those beliefs?
Why this Research Paper?
To answer the first question, this paper stems from my deep belief in the intersection of technology and diplomacy. I believe we are living in a world of unpredictability, crises, and confrontations. And technology is essential to address many global challenges—from the green transition to advancing global healthcare systems, and from ensuring economic opportunities to empowering young people globally.
We explore:
Ethical Challenges in real-time intelligence and surveillance.
Data as a Tool of Soft Power, drawing parallels to ancient principles like Sun Tzu's Art of War.
How Diplomacy and Data interact, with case studies ranging from the Snowden NSA leak to Maori Data Sovereignty.
A Call for Ethical Governance
This paper also reflects on the growing need to rethink our global governance frameworks, particularly in the digital age. Whether it's adapting to AI-driven diplomacy or addressing privacy concerns, ethical governance is more critical now than ever. The future of diplomacy may not be in traditional negotiations but in data-driven interactions and strategic decision-making.
To answer the second question, I sincerely hope this paper may invoke more participation and engagement of more people to work at the intersection of diplomacy and technology.
I invite you all to read my research paper, "Ethical Challenges and Soft Power in Data Diplomacy," which is now available below:
